I chose this topic because when i was on pinterest i came across the photographers jean faucheur and freudenthal verhagen. I think that their photos are what interested me in the topic. One challenge that i would like to overcome in this project is how to compose my photos. I would like to take photos of people with a plain background so that you can focus on the distortion of the person rather than the background.
paul apal'kin:
Paul apal'kin was born in 1987 and started his photograph in 2010. He opened his first personal exhibition in 2012, and in 2013 he joined the Ukrainian Association of Professional photographers.
kalliope-amorphous:
She has explored photography with portraiture and experimental photography. She is a self-taught photographer that has received world wide recognition for her creative and unusual style of art. One reason that i like her photographs is that they are distorted , however you can still see what is going on behind the broken mirror.
Bing wright
He was born in 1958 in Seattle, WA. He lives and works in New York, NY. He uses shattered mirrors to take his photographs of sunset. One reason I like his photos is because they are different to many other photographers work when they use mirrors.
PHOTOGRAPHER ONE ...
freudenthal verhagen:
I chose to evaluate this photo because without the circles it would be a very simple composition. I think that because the photo is in black and white it works better as you can focus on the details of the photo rather than the colours. The circles covering his face distorts the image making the person unrecognisable. One thing that i like about this photograph is that it geometric theme and the devision from the foreground and the background is very distinct. |
PHOTOGRAPHER TWO...
kalliope-amorphous:
This photographer also make the person in the image distorted but achieves this by breaking a mirror. I think that the black and white works better as there is already a lot going in to the photo so adding colour might make it confusing. The most interesting part of the photo to me is that it is a portrait, as you don't tend to find portraits taken in this way. If i was to recreate a photo like this i think that i would use the concept of a portrait in a cracked mirror however i would use a piece of the broken mirror and then take the image. |
David Hockney
Hannah Hoch
Duane Michals
Maurizio Galimberti
Sohei Nishino
These are the photographs that i took for my project. I used a broken mirror and captured people in the reflections, the mirror was piled up so the different angles distorted the reflection of the people. To improve some of the photos i want to use photoshop in order to further experiment.
PHOTO EVALUATION...
in this photograph the area which appears clearest and most sharp is the centre of the photo where the man and his shadow are. Most of the background away from the central focus is slightly out of focus- the photographer uses depth of field to achieve this photograph.there is light around where the focus is. This might be to draw to your eye to it more so. However the light at the focus is broken by the shadow of the man. The photo doesn't let you tell what time of day it is however you can tell that it is natural light so must be during the day and not night.there objects in the photo that act as lines, such as the circle, the gate and the boxes behind the man. The lines in the background are mostly straight but the lines in the foreground tend to be curvy. Most of the lines in the photograph are outlines to people or objects on the Street.there is repeated pattern of the gate in the background to create a pattern but there is no other repetition in this photograph.there are more geometric shapes in the photograph then organic shapes for example the circle in the foreground, the rectangular boxes in the corner and the straight lines in the gate behind.there is depth to the photo but it is a bit unclear. The majority of the photo is made up of positive space making it seem very busy and both the foreground and the background.I think that touch this image would be varied in texture - the center would be smooth and the sides would be more rough and bumpy.in the photograph there is a range of tones from dark to light. It starts from the center being the lightest and works out the way to darker tones.

For this work i used a piece of paper and took photographs through it. I then thought that seeing as i had only been taking dark photos throughout the paper, i would use photos with brighter colours and the covered them with the paper using photoshop. If i was to retake this photo i would try to make sure that the white circle was in the centre of the page and didn't have a different shadow i different images. One thing that i like is that the photos are cropped which means that you have to think as the viewer about where they are and what they might be - everyones interpretation is different.
These photographs are from a separate project that I did to see if I wanted to try a different approach to fragment photography. I took these photos as a larger photograph and then cropped the images in in order to make the photograph a fragment of a larger image, I did this because it leave the viewer to decide how they want the whole photo to appear as it only really shows a small part of it. I don't think that I will be using the photographs as part of my current work because I don't feel that they fit well enough to be in a final project together.
Project 1....
Experimenting with photoshop....
This was my first attempt at using photoshop to experiment on my photographs. overall I think that the photographs came out well and like the way the colours change the way the photographs completely. I would like to try and change the way that the original photographs look again and make them negative so that I can have a different style that is still similar looking to the coloured photographs and the original empty photographs.
These are the results and the process of me editing the original photographs to negative rather than in colour. I don't think that these photographs came out as well as the ones with the coloured fragments, but I do still like the way that the negative edit makes the image look so different to the original one. I would like to further experiment with editing my images negative as I think the effect it has on the photographs is really nice.
This is my experimenting with negative editing, I like the way these photographs came out but don't think that they are as successful as the coloured images with the shattered mirror. For this reason I don't think that I will be using these images as part of my final project because they have not come out as well as the other images from my first experiment.
Project 2....
For this project I took multiple photographs of the same person and layered them on top of each other. Overall I like the way that the photos are coming out, however I would like to refine my work by taking more photos so that I can make the images have more fragments. I like the first one best as it looks like the face is whole and has the most fragments in it.
This is what my projects look like at the moment. I would like to make some more refinements and finalisations before they are ready to be presented.

I have now refined some of my work and created a piece that I want to present as my final project.
Final project evaluation....
I began this project by researching a variety of artists and photographers whose work expressed the theme of fragments. I particularly responded to the work of lucas simoes and paul apal'kin. Their images are imaginative and skillful and i was keen to explore how to create work similar and to develop a new skill. The individual photographs that influenced my work most were photos by both of these artists, this is because they were the most interesting to me and my eye was drawn to them straight away.
I have explored a range of media, processes and techniques in this project including cutting physical copies and layering them, using photoshop to edit the photos i have taken, and taking photos through a shattered mirror . I used all three techniques in my photographs because they resembled the photographers work the most and allowed me to achieve the photographs that i want. I chose to work digitally because it was the way that the photographers i chose to research worked. Throughout this project my work developed in a number of ways, for example i started to do multiple experiments before choosing my final piece. This was good because it meant that the work that i chose to present was the best piece i can produce in the project. I have learnt a number of skills, these include developing my photoshop skills as one of my projects required me to. I have refined my work in various ways, for example redoing two of my photographs for lucas simoes photo and making my paul apal'kin photos brighter. I found using photoshop challenging and it took me a long time to make progress as i wasn't very good at using it.
I am pleased with my final outcomes because they represent how i feel about the theme of fragments. I have chosen to display them in a particular way because i feel like if i were to present them in a very outgoing way it would draw the focus away from the focus of the image. If i had more time i would like to explore the theme of fragments in even more detail by creating more photographs and researching more photographers to widen my ideas on fragments. My photographs are personal because they are similar to the artists but i changed the process that the photographer did in order to make my images look different. I hope that views of my final photographs will understand that i was using the photographers as inspiration and not to copy which is why my photos don't look the same as theirs.
